FINAL PROJECT– SELF-DESIGNED NEW MEDIA WORK

Advanced New Media in the Arts Presentation Self-Evaluation     I feel like given that I didn't use the full term to do this project (because I switched it in week 4) and that each part of the process was brand new to me, the results were fairly decent. I say decent because the project got done and it was nice to learn the entire process, but I feel like I would want to try this again but with more developed skills. I would have liked to have burned more CDs and made better cover images. It wasn't the materials that held me back (I was able to get assistance from a lot of people), but simply that it was all new to me. I had to do everything from scratch: what program to use, how to burn, how to use the drawing tablet I had, how to use the drawing app I had, how to put the respective images on the same document, how to align the pictures to print out properly, and smaller things. That's not to say that I disliked the project; I really loved it. It's nostalgic to me and...

Research Project - The Text: The Irreducible Plural

ART 540 Taylor Swift      I chose to present Taylor Swift given that A. there are some connections with my final project (musical elements) and B. I feel like her lyrics + visuals best represent the prompt.      Looking at the connections between Taylor Swift (her lyrics, her storytelling, etc.) and my final project (burned CDs) is that each album is pertinent to certain times in life. For Taylor Swift, we see her life unfold throughout the duration of her teens + adulthood, where she explores topics such as love, friendships, family, and more; this is done through a couple of genres as well. Her first 4 albums were country albums, and this shows her transition from being a teenager to navigating adulthood. Over the course of these albums, she incorporates more pop songs into her albums. She officially shifts to a pop singer with her 5th album and continues this for her 6th and 7th album. These 3 albums have shown her maturity given her composure regarding ...

Journaling Project No. 3 – Operating: Playing VS. Listening VS. ‘Its Own Erotic’

What are the private components? I don't think there has really been any private components of the final project. Even the behind-the-scenes work has been done with other people. To get the music on the CDs, I had help from a friend of mine who is very tech-savvy. He informed me what equipment I would need and how to move the files over. Figuring out the layout and construction of a cover booklet, I've been assisted by someone in the class who I know has done a CD cover booklet before and Prof. Rinehart. Designing the covers is more of a private component given that I don't like to draw in public, but sometimes I'll screenshare to friends either just for fun or to get an opinion on the art. However, I do realize that I'm not exactly presenting the behind-the-scenes to a large group and keeping the assistance to a minimum for each action. So maybe having these few helpers still keeps all of this private. But I'm still publicly sharing the process as well, so it...

Journaling Project No. 2 - the Death of the Author

"We shall never know, for the good reason that writing is the destruction of every voice, of every point of origin. Writing is that neutral, composite, oblique space where our subject slips away, the negative where all identity is lost, starting with the very identity of the body writing." (Barthes 142).  How I interpret this is that written language is not detailed enough to relay emotions people go through. I see this explanation going into three different directions. One - even though the author can write out their feelings in a way that makes sense to them, others reading it won't every truly feel the emotions that the author went through. It can be read lazily (such as reading it too fast or reading it in a monotone voice), or there can be genuine misinterpretation on the writing. Even if the feeling was caught on by the reader, they might say it/imagine in it in a different dialect/way of saying it. There's so many ways to say one sentence that there is no way ...

Journaling Project No. 1 - Image & Intention: A Message Without A Code

Image
Animal Crossing New Horizon "Because in advertising the signification of the image is undoubtedly intentional; the signifieds of the advertising message are formed a priori by certain attributes of the product and these signifieds have to be transmitted as clearly as possible. If the image contains signs, we can be sure that in advertising these signs are full, formed with a view to the optimum reading: the advertising image is frank, or at least emphatic" (Barthes 33). This image is the cover image that was used to promote Animal Crossing New Horizon when it came out. The title of the franchise is clearly noticeable in the picture - with brown outlining and yellow text. This use of contrasting colors allows for the text itself to not blend into the rest of the image given that bright colors are evident throughout it. While the franchise text can be recognized from a distance, the size does not take up the whole image; it doesn't even take up half. Most of the image is fi...

*Draft* Final Project - Self-Designed New Media Work

I am still on the fence about what I'd like to do for my final project, so this is me throwing ideas into the wind and seeing what comes to me. Animal Crossing mini installation: Back in art installations, my installation was based on a videogame called Overcooked! While I didn't host this installation for the class, I brought in my switch for the class to play the game and bring part of the installation to them. This time, the installation would be based on Animal Crossing. My idea for this is to 3D print out the characters, background/miscellaneous pieces, and terrains that are a part of the game (fruits, flowers, hills, houses, etc.), and paint them. I would have something covering the table - either some sort of cloth or a large piece of paper - to fill the empty spaces with "land" or "sea/river". A map of the "island" would be printed out in the same set up the game has. Ideally, this installation will reflect my Animal Crossing island in the ...

Final Project - Self-Design New Media Work

Final Project time! So for my final project, I have multiple pieces of 2D things interacting with 3D things. It started out simple with drawing jackets onto people mainly just to get the hang of this project. Doing this has helped me figure out what type of program I want to work with and how I would like to style the further pieces. I started out with Whatsapp's and Gallery's drawing tool, but then I ended up using a drawing app -IBIS Paint - for almost the rest of the pieces. After I got situated to the drawing app, I started adding more to the pictures, specifically just revamping people into 2D characters. I made sure to choose images with 2 people so both a 2D character and 3D person can interact in some sort of way. 2 out of the 3 have the figures overlapping in some way; the third is just the two spending time within the same vicinity. Finally, I made more pieces that changed the setting to a 2D setting. This was the goal of my project. However the pieces weren't ex...
